Papering Finished!

The paperers/painters came back this morning. They stained the broom closet door in the kitchen so that it's closer to the colour of the original cupboard doors, finished painting the few bits of trim in the hallway and entryway, got the remaining outdoor second coat done, and touched up a bit here and there in the sitting room. We decided not to put the border up after all. The joiners were unable to get an exact match with the existing ceiling molding so where the new meets the old, there is a fraction of an inch difference in size. It isn't visible unless someone brings it to your attention. If we put the border paper up anywhere near the ceiling molding, which is where we wanted it, then it would be obvious that something isn't straight; the eye is likely to perceive that the border paper was put on crooked. The alternative is to put it at chair rail height but we don't want to do that. So we've decided to just leave it off. As Bill out contractor pointed out today, once we get drapes up and the artwork back on the walls, we won't need it. In fact, it could possibly look like that wee bittie too much going on.

Don has been unpacking the CDs, DVDs, and videos and putting them in order (the CDs, at least) up on their shelves. I have been unpacking the items that go on the mantel, bookcase, coffee table, and in the Welsh Dresser (china cabinet). We're making decisions as we go about what to put where now that we have extra storage space in the utility room and don't have to crowd everything into the dining area.

Next chore for me is to unpack the books and put the ones up on the shelf that we will keep out and decide what to do with the others. (Thank goodness for the storage space under the new window seats.) After that (probably not today) it will be time to bring boxes in from the garage that have been there since we moved into The Rowans in March 2004. The unpacking of these boxes will force the issue of how we move things around between the kitchen and utility room shelves. It is a lot of work but very exciting to have the new space to use. Undoubtedly the charity shop is going to be getting at least one box of goodies that we simply don't need to find space for. Most likely in whatever time is left today we will start putting artwork and quilts back on the walls.

I hope to be able to send a photo tomorrow. You don't want to see what things look like right now--there are things all over the dining table waiting for Don to finish putting the CDs etc. away so the knicknacks can go on the two display shelves in that unit; and there are emptied boxes everywhere with packing materials spilling all around them. It feels sort of like moving into a new home.
