Don had another out-of-town golf outing yesterday (the photo pertains to the bottom half of today's blog but I don't seem to have good control over placement of photos). This time it was the Comrie Golf Club seniors group who hired a coach to take about 30 men to Kirriemuir Golf Course for the day. There was a named cup for first prize, the Walker Cup. Of course, some men were joking with Don before they went, asking him if he intended to win this one too. The fact is, he and David Nicolson tied for the cup. As David is working off a much lower handicap than Don's, they awarded David the cup but Don brought home a bottle of very good gin. They both came in 6 under par for the course, an outstanding showing for the Comrie seniors and a fantastic result for Donald. His goal is to bring his handicap down. This outstanding performance will help him shave 3 strokes off as of next Tuesday. Let's hear it for the boy!
I stayed home finishing up the quilt I had been working on but just now finished hand-sewing the binding on. I've decided to call it "The Women of the Maize" for want of a better title, since they are obviously shucking corn (to use a quaint Southern U.S. phrase).
Our good weather continues although today was a bit less sunny altogether (and cooler) than yesterday. The next time someone tells you that it always rains in Scotland and that summer is the one day when the sun shines, tell them you know that just isn't true.
We have a song thrush in our garden who sings beautifully all day long, starting early and continuing until late. It sings a variety of bird calls, similar to what the American mocking bird does, only the mocking bird has a larger repertoire. Never the less, the song thrush sings beautifully and persistently all day long--and loudly too. It is a delight to hear and we feel blessed to have the bird in such close proximity.
This afternoon Bill, our contractor, came by to see how things looked now that the scaffolding is down. He reported that he finally got in touch with Rob, the joiner who is supposedly making the wardrobe/cupboard for my studio. Unhappily but predictably he hasn't even started yet although he took our go-ahead to do the work on the condition that it would be finished by the end of the first week in June. We are not well pleased but I have to say that we expected this. We instructed Bill to get in touch with Rob one more time and say if he isn't going to deliver within a week's time, we will have to find someone else to do the work. Meanwhile, Bill is going to talk with Barclay about having his joiners possibly fabricate the cupboard and perhaps get someone else to create the doors for it (as they must match our existing wardrobe doors). One way or another we hope to get the studio finished at last before much more time goes by. The room is workable but there are items that would best be put away in there that are still in the way.
Ally, our regular joiner, will be back early tomorrow morning to finish up the things that need doing in the kitchen, e.g., installing the remaining worktop in the kitchen and so forth. On Friday we expect the sparky to put up the outdoor lights and determine where the trench for the pathway lights should go, the brickies to dig that trench and prepare the ground beneath the stone wall for planting, and the fellow to touch up our front door. We are getting closer and closer.
