Step into Our Kitchen

You haven't seen the kitchen since the last worktop was installed and the broom closet door was stained to match the existing cupboards. The first shot is looking toward the utility room and shows, on the left, a bit of the new worktop and just beyond that, the almost invisible broom closet with the new fridge beyond in its own alcove. The broom closet is where the larder fridge (fridge only, no freezer) used to be. When we moved that out to the garage, we converted the space into a broom closet. We would rather have had the broom closet on the other side of the new fridge/freezer but the plan just didn't work out that way. So Don and I are forever opening the broom closet door to get the milk out and opening the fridge to get a broom or step-stool.

The second photo is taken facing the dining area and shows you how nice the open shelving looks now that we've taken the messy cookbooks out and put the earthenware serving pieces in. For a galley kitchen, this one never feels claustrophobic, partially because the kitchen window is huge and lets in lots of light. I think there also must be a bit more floor space than many galley kitchens have. The new flooring shows up nicely in these photos. I don't know how well you can see the pattern but in addition to the browns and beiges, there is a jade blue colour in the floor that matches the worktops. The browns, of course, tie everything in nicely and then the pale peachy-pink thinly striped wallpaper brightens and lightens the room. We're very pleased with the way it turned out.

We finally got some leftover peach pie last night, which we ate as we saw the last half of Heartburn. For dinner, we had the leftover Penne al Sugo from Saturday night with crusty wholegrain Italian bread and a salad.

It is a cool 59 degrees this morning. The weather is alternating between sunshine and cloud with wind gusts of up to 20 mph. As the locals would put it, the day is "a bit unsettled." Don is playing with the Comrie Seniors this morning as he does each Tuesday but today they are playing a three-club for the George Betty Cup. Don has been practicing playing with just 3 clubs--a 3-wood, a 7-iron, and a putter--for two days in preparation. Fingers crossed he'll do well.

I began an exciting new piece yesterday, inspired by a Web-based quilt gallery tour. Now that I don't have easy access to art quilts on display or other art quilters, for that matter, I must depend more heavily on e-mail with my quilter pals in the States and on books, magazines, and quilt-art-focused Websites. Every now and then, when I feel about a quart low on inspiration but creative juices have begun to rise, I'll take myself on an e-gallery tour, visiting art quilters' personal Websites. Fellow quilter Floris Flam sent me some new links recently which I've been enjoying and from browsing them I've been inspired to try something different. So far so good, but I need to get back to work on it. I'll put up a photo when it's finished, but for now, perhaps you'd like to see some of the sites I've browsed lately:
