It Isn't Raining Rain, You Know...

...it's raining violets. At least, that's how the song goes. Rain had been predicted but each day it seems to move a day further away. In other words, it never gets here. Which is perfectly okay as long as I have other ways of watering the plants.

The violets took the form of this wee quilt (~8" by 10") which I made yesterday afternoon. I'll be teaching a workshop on October 25th on making floral picture quilts using raw-edge applique. Actually, the flowers aren't even really appliqued on, they are stuck on and then just barely quilted down. (This technique is not an invention of mine but one that the local quilters wanted to learn after seeing my quilt, "Unseamly Flowers," at the St Fillans Show last month.) Trish Hamilton came over yesterday afternoon so I could rehearse teaching the method. She made a good start on her own quilted bouquet in a vase while I made my own smaller and simpler version to show her some of the techniques.

As Trish and I were working in the studio, Don spent the first hour working with another member of the Strathearn Music Society Committee on a publicity piece. Don's assignment on the committee puts him in charge of publications and publicity. Following that meeting, he had another hour-long meeting (via Skype) with two AU professors about the ongoing distance learning programme there.

It continues to be quite hot, getting up almost to 85 yesterday at midday. I worked in the garden all morning and, believe me, it was both hot and humid. On Monday evening we had to run the fan again all night in order to sleep. Fortunately, it began to cool down yesterday afternoon and the humidity dropped. For Down South (England, and mostly the southern part of it, especially the coastal areas), the weather has been beastly hot and extremely humid. Today promises to be the worst yet for them. It sounds very similar to what the U.S. east coast is experiencing these days. It's to be hot again here too, but nothing like what they'll experience in Southern England. So far today we have a delightful breeze which will help keep the temperature from feeling quite so warm.

On Monday afternoon, Don and I went to Perth to look at curtain/drape fabrics at Acorn Fabrics. We brought 3 samples home and were able to eliminate one of them almost immediately. The second one we liked was a lovely Art Nouveau fabric but it was so light in colour that there wasn't quite enough contrast. Besides, it would have been too formal a touch for our decor and our lifestyle. So we have decided on a cheery plaid that picks up all our colours in our. Someone from Acorn Fabrics will come out to measure the windows and the French doors so that we can get an estimate.

Graham Cramb has been back each day this week to do a little something. This morning he came to put the finishing touches on his work. The garage is finished and the broom closet door in the kitchen now matches the original kitchen cupboards and has a nice shine to it.

Strathearn Lighting has called to let us know our pathway lights are in. So you can see that we are moving right along through the summer, continuing to get the house finished up and just generally "getting on with it." It's delightful to have so much clear weather. We just hope it is clear during the Comrie Fortnight, which begins this coming weekend.
