First Full Day in the Highlands

Friday 20th July was our first full day in Inver-alligan. The day dawned bright (see my sunrise photo above) and just got better and better. After breakfast on the terrace, we packed a lunch and got ourselves ready for a hike along the upper hills of Alligan overlooking Loch Torridon.

Don and I had taken this walk back in 1993. Then, our B&B host had followed us to the end of the walk, the hamlet of Diabeg, where we parked our car. Then she had driven us to the start of the walk at Alligan Shuas (south Alligan). We hiked all day for a total of 7.5 miles. The views on that other gorgeous day were marvelous and nothing about the walk was overly taxing except that we couldn't find the trail at the very end, which trail went across a rock fall. We did quite a bit of scrambling and if it hadn't been for heather and bracken to cling onto, I don't know how we would have managed the last bit. This time, we were starting from where our cottage was in Inveralligan, passing through Alligan Shuas and upward to the ridge of the hills alongside the loch.

You can see from the photos above what gorgeous scenery we had and how lovely the day was. We probably walked close to 5 miles before retracing our steps back to the cottage. In fact, once we had backtracked as far as the road, Kathy and I stayed behind waiting for Don and Peter to go get the car and come back for us. It was a terrific walk but tiring for those of us (Don and I) who don't hike on a regular basis. That evening we went to the Kishorn Seafood Bar near Lochcarron for wonderful fresh seafood.
