First Snow of 2008

Light snow was pre-dicted for today. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground when we got up, but it wasn't doing anything at 9:30 this morning so Don and Gordon headed off to St. Fillans to see if they could get 9 holes in. They played a few holes but then it began to snow quite persistently and so they packed it in and came home. Until about 1 o'clock or so it snowed off and on, heavy at times. Now there is white all over everything (not deep, of course) but it isn't snowing at the moment. The sun even tried to shine a few times. Tomorrow's forecast is calling for heavy snow so I don't think there will be any more golf until Saturday at the earliest.

Our tradition is to watch the film Fargo on the evening of the first snow of the season. Fortunately, we have nothing else planned for tonight so we will do that.

New Year's Day was a lazy and quiet day. That night we went out at 6:30 for a meal at Syd and Lorna Peedle's cottage which is adjacent to Comrie Cottage where we used to do self-catering when we came to Comrie on holiday. We had a lovely meal and a nice visit with them in front of a real log fire.

Last night was our Chili Cook-Off. Early yesterday one of our 3 guests phoned to say she was under the weather and so we phoned the Hamiltons to see if they'd like to round out the party. Fortunately, they were available so 6 of us chowed down on chili, cornbread muffins, salad, and beer with Key lime pie for dessert. We had a great time and our tactful guests seemed to thoroughly enjoy both chilis for they declared a tie between Chef Lynn's Mild-Mannered Cincinnati-style Chili and Chef Don's Pork Chunk Chili with Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce. We don't have much left over so it seems they weren't eating just to be polite!

We had a surprise e-mail this morning from our Scottish-American friend, Dorothy Penders, who was in Arbroath visiting her sister and brother-in-law, Val and Bill Campbell. As soon as the e-mail came in, I phoned there and after wishing Val and Bill a Happy New Year, both Don and I had a nice chinwag with Dorothy who flies back to the States tomorrow.

After that we took our holiday decorations down, untrimmed and de-lighted the tree, and packed everything away. The little tree is now outside enjoying the fresh air. The mantel is now de-cluttered and all the pine needles have been vacuumed up. I must admit I miss the twinkling lights and all the colour of the decorations but it is time to move on.

Cards and letters from you are still coming through the letter slot. We enjoy sitting down by the fire and reading your recaps of 2007. Happily we also are getting responses to the January 1st Highland Line. Some of you wrote whom we haven't heard from in a long time, which is super.
Well in the last few minutes the sky has darkened and it's begun snowing again. I think I'll go read a novel by the fire.
