My Pupils' Work

Today I taught a quilting workshop called "Unseamly Flowers" which allowed 17 women (18 if you count me) to make flower arrangement wall quilts, making up the flowers as they went along. A few decided to make more or less "real" flowers while the rest of us just invented ours. The title "Unseamly Flowers" refers to the fact that there was no piecing to be done (so no seams). The technique is called raw-edge applique because no edges are turned under or even stitched. Right now each stem, flower, and leaf is held down with a tiny dot of white craft glue. When they get the pictures finished, they will free-motion machine-stitch the flowers down but only just to attach them to the surface. Edges will be left "raw." Everyone seemed to have a really good time. I am exhausted but had a great time too.

Thank you, Marion. It was an exhilirating day. I was really pleased to see such a variety of projects. One woman made her flowers out of a silk plaid by simply cutting squares out of the plaid pattern and then cutting notches to form a little daisy. Everyone seemed to have a great time.
