I've gotten back to my quilting studio and am again working on the intricate browns quilt. Its working title is Mandala for Melinda. Here you see one block I have cut out but still must sew together as well as 12 sewn blocks mocked up on the design wall. Each block is complete but none of the 12 are sewn together. I will wait until all the blocks have been made to assemble them into the final design. I'm not quite sure yet how many more blocks I'll need. As these are 9" blocks when finished, what you see here represents 36" wide by 27" long. This may represent approximately a third of the total quilt, but it gives you an idea of how interesting the repeating patterns are: large circles with dark brown in the center, small circles with yellow in the center, small squares around the smaller circles, larger ones around the larger circles, and "ghost" circles of all sizes floating around the definable patterns. Now you can see why it is so intrigueing to work on a piece like this one: each time I finish a block, I can't wait to see how it looks with the others.
We had rain during the night. At one point I woke up and it was raining quite heavily. Very early this morning I woke again to the sound of gentle rain. By the time we got up, however, the rain had stopped yet it remains quite dark and rainy looking. The forecast calls for heavy showers or heavy rain for today and the next 3 days, but the dear only knows what we'll actually experience. Some of us in this household wish for rain any time; others of us only want it at night so they can play golf during the day.
Juliet Sutcliffe phoned this morning to say hello and to remind us that the French Market is on in Crieff this weekend. Each year we have missed it so there will be no excuse this time. We understand there are vendors with wonderful wines, cheeses, sausages, and other delights. The Crieff Highland Games are on this weekend too. http://www.crieff-highland-games.co.uk/ Crieff resident and film actor, Dennis Lawson, will be the chieftain this year. He was in Local Hero back in 1984 and also was in the Star Wars films as well as many more films and television shows. More significantly these days, he is Ewan MacGregor's uncle (Ewan grew up in Crieff). http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/faces/denis_lawson.shtml
Tomorrow evening Syd and Lorna Peedle are coming to dinner. They are the owners of Comrie Cottage where we used to do self-catering before we moved to Comrie. I think we'll serve them Trish Hamilton's wonderful chicken dish.
