Hit the Decks

Just before we rushed off to New York state and before the new tiling got put up in the kitchen, Peter Bryson put decking on top of the concrete porches and stoops at all our entries. In fact, he finished the work the day we left for the airport. I took photos just after we got back but that was the day the tiler came and I'm afraid the decking got lost in the shuffle, as it were.

So here are photos of the new front entry decking and the verandah decking, with its decorative diamond pattern in the centre. This isn't decking as it's done in the US (or at least the way it was being done when we were there) but makes a nice cladding for the concrete which just never looked good. We debated about painting it or having terra cotta tiles put on, but in the end we were concerned that either of those options would be too slippery in frosty weather. The decking at the front entrance brought the porch up high enough that Peter had to build us a little step. It looks nice, though, don't you think? It's certainly an improvement of the naked concrete!

Good news came by e-mail this morning: the food mill is now on its way to us. Apple butter here I come!
